UMMEED
Our Story
UMMEED- A Social Welfare Trust was born out of a deep desire to bring hope and opportunity to the most vulnerable members of society. Established in
2015 by a group of compassionate individuals, UMMEED began with a simple yet powerful mission: to uplift underprivileged community of the society
through education, healthcare, and social welfare initiatives.
Over the years, our efforts have expanded to include relief and community outreach programs. UMMEED has provided essential food and medical relief during natural disasters, such as floods, and during the COVID-19 lockdowns, ensuring that the most vulnerable receive the care they need. Driven by the belief that every person deserves a chance to succeed, UMMEED continues to work tirelessly to create a brighter, more equitable future for all. UMMEED’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering hope that together, we can make a lasting difference
Who Are We?
What started as a small initiative at a remote village of Mohabbatpur in 2015, has now been joined by more than a hundred active members across the globe. We are a group of doctors, educationists and working professionals of various fields who are joined by the common passion in their hearts to serve the society by bringing education for all strata in remote villages of the country. We are pledged to bring changes in the society by bringing the light of education to the doors of the poor and underprivileged.
.
Why Education?
More than 70% of the population lives in rural India. The children in the rural society are not getting exposure to quality education leading them to a compromised life. There is a continuous decline of enrolment in Govt schools at primary and secondary levels. Education system in the country has shifted towards privatisation in the last few decades. Poor parents are forced to send their children to costly private schools despite stark poverty. Quality primary education has become costlier which makes it difficult for access by the marginalised society. This deprives poor students from establishing strong foundation of education and honing of their inborn skills at school level. Many young Indians are moving away from schools or are dropping out after primary education. Thus, there is an educational divide in the society present across the country. Poor parents are forced to put their children to child labour than handing them with books of knowledge. Hence, these underprivileged children of the marginalised society are getting into the vicious cycle of illiteracy and poverty.
We, at UMMEED believe that, if quality education is given to one generation, then poverty and ignorance will automatically be eradicated from the society. We create a pool of funds annually which is utilised for compensating the tuition fees of needy poor students. We run various programmes for meeting these challenges.
UMMEED- A Social Welfare Trust
UMMEED – A Social Welfare Trust is a charitable, nonprofit organization established in 2015 with the mission to uplift and empower underprivileged communities in India. The name “UMMEED” translates to “Hope,” which reflects the organization’s core purpose: to bring hope and opportunities to those who need it most.
Trust’s deed was signed under section 12A with registration No IV- 180200082/15 dated 30 Nov 2015. The trust is registered under Section 12AB (for Income Tax exemption) and Section 80G (for donor tax benefits) of the Income Tax Act 1961. The trust is certified with Form 10AC with unique Registration No AAATU7387AE20231.
The trust has its own PAN identity No AAATU7387A. The trust does not accept any foreign funding in any form. An independent and open audit of its accounts is done by a registered chartered accountant annually. There are no hidden accounts of the trust. Annual report of the trust’s accounts and the school run by the trust are shared with its permanent members.
The idea of initiating social work for education emerged among a few residents of Islampur around 2010 and thereby a need was felt to register a trust for the purpose. Islampur is a sub-division of West Bengal which was created in 1956 by amalgamating Goalpokhar, Islampur and Chopra thanas (police stations) of erstwhile Kishanganj sub-division; parts of Thakurganj thana and Gopalpur thana of Purnea District. Most of the villages of Islampur sub-division are still educationally backward. Average literacy rate of Islampur is 63% which is much below the national average of 74.04%. The focal area of Dimrulla is economically and educationally backward with average literacy rate below 10%. In order to set the ball rolling, UMMEED chose Dimrulla of Islampur, West Bengal as the focus area for welfare of society.
What started as a small initiative in a remote village of West Bengal has grown into a beacon of hope for countless families over a decade. Our journey began with the establishment of a school in village Mohabbatpur (Dimrulla) of Islampur sub-division, where we aimed to provide quality education to children who had no access to it.
Our endeavours met lot of social challenges in its path in addition to the hassles of securing funds for acquisition of land and construction of building for running a school. After lots of efforts by the core members, a dedicated team of ground workers was gathered for the cause. We faced significant obstacles from the ignorant parents of the village who preferred child labour to education due to their economic hardship. One of the greatest challenge was to gain the trust and confidence of the villagers to send their kids to school for modern education. In order to raise awareness about the importance of education and to inspire poor families for the cause, the ground workers’ team conducted numerous meetings and door-to-door campaigns across villages.
Starting from ground zero, UMMEED now runs a state-of-the-art Public School on CBSE curriculum which is providing life-changing education to over three hundred students of classes Nursery to 8th. We are providing quality education at the primary and secondary levels with a very nominal tuition fees, thus, making modern education affordable to all at UMMEED Public School. Our cause has resulted in significant reduction in dropouts after primary education and more children of the region are now going for higher education. At UMMEED – commitment to these children goes beyond academics. We are focused on the overall growth and development of the child by indulging him/ her in team sports activities, cultural programs, debates, educational tours and other learning activities in order to ensure a well-rounded education.
